Neil Armstrong Biopic Finally on the Way
Filed under: Drama », Casting », Deals », Universal », Warner Brothers », Distribution »
After a false start back in 2003, it looks like Neil Armstrong's life story -- and specifically an adaptation of First Man: The Life of Neil Armstrong by NASA historian James R. Hansen -- might finally make its way to the screen. Originally, Clint Eastwood was slated to direct the film for Warner Bros., but now the rights have been sold to Universal, and Nicole Perlman (who also has a project about the 1986 Space Shuttle disaster in the works) is writing the screenplay. No word from Variety about whether Eastwood is still eyeing the project, but since he sold away the rights to the novel, I assume the answer is no.Milla Jovovich Joins Zahn & Olyphant on 'A Perfect Getaway'

Not very long ago, Jessica told you that Steve Zahn and Timothy Olyphant had signed up to play in David Twohy's A Perfect Getaway, but it seems like the writer / director was scouting for actresses over the weekend. Looks like Milla Jovovich will be paired up with Zahn (the lucky dog) and Ms. Kiele Sanchez will be hanging with Mr. Olyphant. (Genre fans will remember David Twohy from flicks like The Arrival, Pitch Black, Below, and ... The Chronicles of Riddick.)According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Jovovich and Sanchez join Timothy Olyphant and Steve Zahn in the thriller, which revolves around a newlywed couple on their honeymoon in Hawaii who run into two hikers who turn out to be vicious killers." Call me psychic, but I'm betting it's the Olyphant / Sanchez couple who do the stalking and the Zahn / Jovovich duo who do the running ... although it'd probably be more interesting the other way around.
The whole gang will begin shooting A Perfect Getaway next week in Puerto Rico and Hawaii. Tough gig. As far as the flick is concerned, I'm just a bit skeptical. Haven't we had enough of the Americans Terrorized Overseas thrillers yet? Then again (Chronicles notwithstanding) I'm a big fan of the Twohy, so I suppose one more dose of Passport Purgatory won't be all that bad.
Steve Zahn Will Make 'A Perfect Getaway'

To be honest, I'm always a little surprised that Steve Zahn managed to carve out a dramatic acting career. I can't help but think 'Studs' whenever I look at him, but since Rescue Dawn I'm not the only one who discovered that Zahn can handle the 'grittier' side of life. The Hollywood Reporter announced that Zahn has signed to star alongside Timothy Olyphant (Hitman) in the psychological thriller, A Perfect Getaway.David Twohy will direct from his own script about a honeymooning couple who become the targets for a pair of killers. Zahn will play the husband and Olyphant (true to form) will play one of the violent psychos. There is no word yet on the partners for each of our leading men, but it's not like its going to be all that difficult to fill the parts of 'Frightened Wife" and "Psycho Killer". Twohy made his name as a screenwriter and has made some good and some not so-good movies. Twohy has directed in the past, but with the exception of Pitch Black, there isn't much to recommend some of his previous endeavors.
Zahn already has three other films in various stages of production. First up will be two comedies, a baseball flick titled Calvin Marshall and then a romantic comedy with the very unfunny title of Management. A Perfect Getaway is set to start filming on location in Puerto Rico and Hawaii starting at the end of this month, but there is no word of a release date. Stay tuned to Cinematical for any news that comes our way.
Timothy Olyphant is Looking to Make a 'Getaway'

They say the whole marriage thing will be the best day of your life -- followed by a sweet and romantic vacation that will start off your many years together. The same "they" also claim that soon after -- your sex life will plummet, work will keep you busy, and the kids will run you off your feet. So, you should enjoy those moments while you can. But what if you can't? Is your future more doomed if you don't have the proper send-off to happily wedded life? What if your honeymoon isn't full of romantic bliss? Do you have a chance if someone tries to kill you while you're getting sun and sexy time? The Hollywood Reporter has posted that Timothy Olyphant, fresh off his own killing gig, is set to star in an upcoming thriller called A Perfect Getaway. The brainchild of writer/director David Twohy, who previously brought us the likes of Critters 2, The Fugitive, Waterworld, G.I. Jane, Pitch Black, and The Chronicles of Riddick, Getaway will star Olyphant as "a newlywed whose Hawaiian honeymoon becomes a nightmare when he and his bride are stalked by two killers." That really sucks. I wonder if they're being stalked for something that happened before, or if in their newly-wedded bliss, they muck up something for the killers. Whatever the reason, it's certainly a crappy case of luck. There's no word on Tim's lucky co-star yet, but with production set to begin March 17th in Puerto Rico, we should hear more soon.
Review: Hitman

Exec #1: "OK, so we bought the rights to this hot (old) video game. We need a story."
Exec #2: "What's the game called?"
#1: "Hitman."
#2: "OK, so it's a movie about an assassin. This stuff writes itself."
#1: "Yeah, but how much action should we put in there? Action scenes are really expensive, you know..."
#2: "Hey, I got it. Instead of going the 'action route' let's try something different. Let's focus more on those "plot" scenes from the video game that I'm just sure everyone watches, despite the fact that you can press ENTER and skip over 'em at any time. They're mostly dialog!"
#1: "Great, get me a young French director who'll do whatever we say, a screenwriter who hasn't written a flick in five years, and a lead actor who couldn't possibly be a worse fit for this 'hitman' guy. And go easy on the action scenes."
#2: "Cool. Production starts tomorrow. The marketing team has the trailer all set to go."
I'm sorry, but when you go to a restaurant and order, say, peanut butter and jelly, you'd be justifiably annoyed if the sandwich showed up without the peanut butter. You'd probably demand a refund if you purchased a cat with no spine ... and it would definitely be cause for alarm if you bought a porno mag that offered only two naked pictures. But when it comes to Hollywood action pics, we're completely inured to the scam by now: Generate just enough flashy action to fill a two-minute trailer, and that's really all your movie needs. Once you get the people into the cinema ... who cares? They already paid their money, right?
Timothy Olyphant: Almost a Trekkie?

He shaved his locks off to be bald Hitman, but it looks like Timothy Olyphant wasn't as keen to put on a stretchy space uniform and join the world of Trekkies. Was a possible future of Star Trek conventions and Comic-Cons, action figures, and rabid fanboys just too much for him? (Sure, there's similar stuff that comes along with Hitman, but not to the same level, of course.) MTV recently talked with the actor, and he revealed that he had been in talks to boldly go, with bad grammar, into the realms of space.Olyphant says: "I went in and met with J.J. Abrams about one of the characters. That led to a series of conversations, and I was very flattered. Lots of e-mails were exchanged between the two of us. Ultimately, I think we both were aware that it just didn't make sense. It was a mutual thing." But, that being said, Timothy says that he's still a huge fan of Abrams: "If [Abrams] called to ask me to do anything, I would do it." After Star Trek, the director is supposed to take on the untitled project about real-life student, Hunter Scott. At 12, he researched the sinking of the U.S.S. Indianapolis during WWII and had the case reopened. Olyphant could definitely handle some military work, so we might just see Olyphant take on a role in that, if he gets the call.
But first up is the Trek, so just who was he in talks to portray? MTV thinks it might have been Dr. McCoy... and if not, maybe Nero or Kirk. Should he have been in the cast? If so, as who?
Olyphant Living 'The High Life'
Filed under: Comedy », Casting », Newsstand »
Variety reports that Timothy Olyphant has signed for the comedy heist film, High Life. Based on the play by Lee MacDougall, the story centers on four hapless criminals in a heist gone wrong. The play premiered in Toronto in 1996 and went on to win a DORA award. Olyphant will star as their leader who is ultimately brought down by his incompetent partners. In the original play, the four friends were hopeless morphine addicts, but I'm going to take a guess and say that the new script might gloss over that particular element -- but it will all depend on just how dark this comedy wants to get.
Gary Yates has already been signed to direct, and also co-wrote the script with MacDougall. Yates is French-Canadian by birth and most of his credits are in Canadian television -- although he has already written and directed his one heist film titled Seven Ways Lucky, so the experience might come in handy. MacDougall is an actor as well as a playwright, but considering his biggest credit to date is in Cheaper by the Dozen 2, he might be better off sticking to writing.
Joining Olyphant in his band of fun-loving criminals are Joe Anderson (Across the Universe), Stephen Eric McIntyre (The Lookout) and Rossif Sutherland (Poor Boy's Game). With Hitman due for release in the coming weeks, in between re-shoots for the video game adaptation (you can also read Cinematical's interview with Olyphant about some of those Hitman rumors here), Olyphant has already finished work on the Iraq war drama Stop-Loss with Ryan Philippe. Then it's off to do some video game voice-over work for Turok. Plus, High Life has already begun production, so it doesn't look like Olyphant is going to have any down time in the near future.
New International Poster for 'Hitman'
Filed under: Action », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », 20th Century Fox », Games and Game Movies », Posters »
I have to admit, the closer we get to the big-screen version of Hitman, the worse it is starting to look. A new international poster for the best-selling Eidos adaptation has just been released (click on the image for a larger version), and even if I put my personal opinion aside, it's still a pretty tacky-looking poster. Granted, I wasn't the biggest fan of a majority of the poster art that has come out of the project, with the exception of the French one, but it's possible that this one is the ugliest in the bunch so far. Starring Timothy Olyphant (Catch and Release) as the unstoppable Agent 47, the story centers on a political conspiracy with a damsel in distress. All the while, our hero tries to uncover his past. The adaptation was written by Skip Woods, and when you consider what happened to his other projects, it's not a stretch to say that the guy seems to be working under a curse lately.
Bad news for Hitman fans started to pile up back in August. First, 20th Century Fox announced that the film's release date was being pushed back, and then there were rumors that director Xavier Gens was being pulled from the project. Talk of the film going for a PG-13 rating seemed like a recipe for disaster -- for goodness sake the movie is called Hitman, what exactly was he supposed to do for two hours? Tend to his tomato plants? Luckily it all turned out be idle gossip and Fox confirmed that Gens was still attached to the project and that the film would be maintaining what they call, "a hard R'. Hitman will arrive in theaters on November 21st.
Cinematical Seven: Hottest Hunks of Horror

a. a handsome man with a well-developed physique.
One might argue that some tastes are, therefore, off, but subjectivity and sex are one of the world's big blessings. We don't all lust for the same people, and thus, the earth can stay safe. Otherwise, imagine a world-wide Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered. It wouldn't be pretty. So, what follows are my list of hunks.
I am sure you will question some of my picks, and I will admit -- some don't have the stellar physique that the others do. That being said, each of them have been in horror movies, and they've done their fair share of testosterone bewitching. But this is just my own, subjective taste, which will probably bother and bewilder some. But that's where the comments come in. Share your horror hunks, who have chased, or been chased, on-screen -- extra points if they're a little surprising. This is Halloween, after all, which is all about a world that's just a little different...
EXCLUSIVE: Ian McShane Tells Cinematical HBO Has Scrapped Those 'Deadwood' Movies
Filed under: Deals », Fandom », Newsstand », HBO Films », Western »
Yeah, I'm not happy about it either. Earlier today, I got a call from Ian McShane to talk about his new family fantasy movie, The Dark is Rising, and I asked him the big question Deadwood fans have been wanting to know for a while now -- was HBO just blowing smoke with its promise to wrap up the series with a couple of made-for-TV movies? Well, the answer is yes, McShane revealed to us. "I just got a call on Friday from ... a dear friend of mine, who told me that they're packing up the ranch," McShane said. "They're dismantling the ranch and taking the stuff out. That ship is gonna sail. Bonsoir, Deadwood." He went on to say that even if the movies were happening, there would be the strike to consider, and on top of that, he's committed to a filming schedule that would prevent him from doing them anytime before late next year anyway.
I told McShane that as a fan, I felt completely cheated by this move on HBO's part. "You feel cheated? Imagine how I feel!" he replied. "We all do. We all do. It was one of those one-off jobs that you do which has got an extraordinary creative brain behind it, and it kept getting better, and the actors were great. It was a fabulous place to be and work. It was a workshop cum theater cum film. It was an extraordinary time. But everything has to come to an end, babe." So, there you have it.
